Figo considering retiring after Euro 2004

Luis Figo has admitted he could retire from international football after Euro 2004 to make way for a new generation of Portugal stars including Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo.

"After many years in the national team I am capable of continuing a few more years but those coming after me need their space," Figo told Spain's El Pais newspaper on Thursday.

"And the more time they have to prepare themselves the better. I see myself capable of continuing but now life is offering me other options that are also important."

Ronaldo, 19, is one of a number of up and coming Portuguese stars that Figo believes, will form the core of the selection for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Figo, who will be 34 by the time that tournament comes around, admits he could no longer be an automatic choice for his country.

"What good does it do me to participate in the qualifying rounds, take a team-mate's place and then not go on to the final phase?"

"It's better to form the team now."

Portugal kick off their campaign here on Saturday in the opening match against Greece. Group A also contains Portugal's biggest rivals, Spain, and Russia.

Figo is set to start the match against Greece after overcoming a muscle problem in his left leg that forced him to miss training earlier this week.
