Ferguson Has Made "Monumental Mistake", Says Best

Manchester United legend George Best believes Sir Alex Ferguson has made "a monumental mistake" in selling David Beckham.

The England captain left Old Trafford for Real Madrid on Wednesday in a £25m move, but Best believes the sale has been a "shambles".

He told the Mail on Sunday newspaper: "It just makes no sense at all. The whole thing is a shambles and I would be spitting blood if I were a United shareholder."

Best, who was a similarly iconic figure during his time at Old Trafford, believes Ferguson's rift with Beckham has allowed the star to leave far too cheaply.

"David's transfer is a bad deal - and one that hands United's best asset to their biggest rivals in Europe," added Best.

"They have let him go far too cheaply - he is worth at least £35m to £40m."

"It's a monumental mistake - and one that Alex Ferguson will come to regret. He has let his emotions rule his head."
