European round-up

An injury time equaliser gave Bayern Munich their third successive German title, but Real Madrid will have to wait at least another week to clinch the Spanish crown despite a win over Rayo Vallecano at the weekend. Liverpool followed up their UEFA Cup triumph last week by beating Charlton 4-0 to grab England's third Champions League spot for next season. AS Roma won to stay on course for the Italian title, but victories for Lazio and Juventus kept the race very much alive.

Spain

Deportivo Coruna held up Real Madrid's championship celebrations by beating Real Oviedo 3-2 with the help of a Diego Tristan hat-trick. Real, who needed to beat Rayo Vallecano and hope Deportivo lost, did their part with a 1-0 win but will have to wait at least until next weekend to claim their 28th title. Real Mallorca stayed on course for a Champions League place with a 1-0 win at Espanyol wich keeps them three points ahead of Barcelona, who won 1-0 at Alaves on Saturday. Champions League finalists Valencia warmed up for Wednesday's match in Milan with a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Friday to stay third.

Germany

Bayern Munich gave themselves the perfect boost ahead of Wednesday's Champions League final against Valencia by clinching their 17th title on the last day of the season, but they left it very late. Needing just a draw against Hamburg SV, they were trailing by a goal deep into stoppage time when Swedish defender Patrik Andersson equalised from a free kick to claim the vital point with a 1-1 draw. Schalke 04, who would have been champions had Hamburg held out, came back from two goals down to beat Unterhaching 5-3 but had to settle for second place and a Champions League spot. Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen joined them by finishing third and fourth, while Hertha Berlin and SC Freiburg won the right to compete in the UEFA Cup.

Italy

A 4-1 victory at Bari kept Roma on course for the Serie A crown and also saw their hosts become the first team to be relegated out of the top flight. Two goals from Argentine Gabriel Batistuta set them on their way and the victory kept them five points clear of second-placed Lazio and six ahead of Juventus in third. Lazio beat Udinese 3-1 to keep up the pressure on their city rivals, helped by two goals from another Argentine Hernan Crespo. Juve came from behind at Bologna, for whom Giuseppe Signori opened the scoring, but two goals from David Trezeguet and
strikes by Igor Tudor and Darko Kovacevic saw them run out 4-1 winners.

England

Liverpool's remarkable season ended with a 4-0 win at Charlton and place in the Champions League to add to their UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup triumphs. Two goals from Robbie Fowler and one apiece from Danny Murphy and Michael Owen secured third place behind champions Manchester United and Arsenal. The victory means fourth-placed Leeds United, 3-1 winners over Leicester City, will have to settle for a UEFA Cup campaign next term. Premier league newcomers Ipswich Town saw their Champions Leagues hopes dashed with a 1-1 draw at Derby County, but fifth
place at least guarantees them a spot in the UEFA Cup, which they won in 1981. They will be joined by Chelsea, whose 2-1 win at relegated Manchester City was good enough to secure sixth place.

France

Lille, promoted to the first division at the end of last season, qualified for the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over last year's champions Monaco. A goal eight minutes from time by Bruno Cheyrou broke the deadlock and secured Lille third place behind champions Nantes and Lyon. The defeat means Monaco will not take part in European competition next term for only the second time in 13 seasons. Girondons Bordeaux, who were third going into the final weekend of matches, lost 2-0 at Metz and finished fourth. Bordeaux will play in next season's UEFA Cup as will Sedan, who beat AJ Auxerre 1-0 in their final match. Strasbourg and Toulouse lost and were relegated along with St Etienne whose 2-2 home draw against En Avant Guingamp meant Marseille survived following their 1-1 draw at Troyes. St Etienne -- who needed a win to have any chance of staying up -- will go down whatever the French authorities decide about the seven points they were at one stage docked over the passport scandal.

The Netherlands

A 2-2 draw at Utrecht ensured Feyenoord will finish second behind PSV Eindhoven in the first division and qualify for the Champions League. In the battle for the third Champions League place Ajax and and Vitesse Arnhem both won -- Ajax 3-1 at Twente Enschede, 10-man Vitesse 3-0 against Fortuna Sittard -- and remain on the same points total with one match remaining. Champions PSV, who face Twente on Wednesday in the Dutch Cup final in their quest for the double, beat Graafschap Doetinchem 3-2 with a 70th minute John de Jong goal proving the winner. Sparta Rotterdam, who have never been relegated, will fight it out with Fortuna or Graafschap and six second division clubs in the relegation playoffs after a 2-0 defeat at NAC Breda.
