England boss Eriksson had crunch talks with walkabout Beckham

England boss Sven Goran Eriksson has given his captain, David Beckham, a dressing down after Saturday's win over Northern Ireland.

Becks, 29, went walkabout too much against Northern Ireland for the liking of the England boss.

Beckham was supposed to stay wide on the right but, from the kick-off, he was treading on the toes of central midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard before being replaced by Kieron Dyer with 18 minutes left.

Eriksson said: "There was a bit of frustration but, after a while, David went wider."

"We talked about it on the bench and that's what coach Steve McClaren asked him to do in the first half."

"We asked Gary Neville and David to make sure one of them at least was always wide when we had the ball because it would be easier to open up Northern Ireland a little bit."
