Djorkaeff joins MLS side against Madrid

MetroStars midfielder Youri Djorkaeff will face Zinedine Zidane, his former teammate on France's 1998 World Cup champion, when a Major League Soccer select side opposes Real Madrid in a friendly next week in Spain.

Djorkaeff was among 19 players selected Friday by MLS executives and New England Revolution coach Steve Nicol, who will lead the team in Tuesday's Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu.

The select side includes nine players from the MLS All-Star team that beat England's Fulham 4-1 on July 30 and six members of the U.S. national team: Landon Donovan of the Los Angeles Galaxy, Jeff Cunningham and Pablo Mastroeni of the Colorado Rapids, Frankie Hejduk of the Columbus Crew, Jimmy Conrad of the Kansas City Wizards and the Revolution's Clint Dempsey.

Djorkaeff, playing his first season in MLS, will be joined by MetroStars teammate Amado Guevara of Honduras and four other international players.

Besides Dempsey, goalkeeper Matt Reis and midfielder Shalrie Joseph will be among the MLS representatives, giving the Revolution the most players on the side with three. No other team had two on the select side and each of MLS' 12 clubs were represented.

The friendly has served as Real Madrid's final preparation match before its begins its season since 1979. Real Madrid opens its schedule at Cadiz on Aug. 28.
