Di Stefano might have bypass surgery Wednesday

Real Madrid's honorary president and former star Alfredo Di Stefano could undergo heart bypass surgery Wednesday if his condition remains stable.

Doctors at La Fe Hospital in Valencia said Tuesday that although his condition is still serious after a severe heart attack, Di Stefano's circulation has improved.

He had the attack Saturday. On Sunday, he experienced an irregular heartbeat and fever.

The 79-year-old Di Stefano, born in Argentina, began his career with River Plate before moving to Colombia's Millionarios in 1949. He arrived in Spain in 1953 and tried out with FC Barcelona before going to Real Madrid and becoming its most illustrious player with 454 goals in 684 matches.

He was European player of the year in 1957 and 1959. Di Stefano won five consecutive European Cups and eight Spanish league titles.

He became Real Madrid's honorary president in 2000.
