Deportivo bow out of Europe with 2-0 win over Man United

Deportivo Coruna bowed out of the Champions League with a deserved 2-0 win in their final second phase match against a weakened side put out by Group D winners Manchester United on Tuesday.

A first half tap-in from midfielder Victor and an own goal from defender Mark Lynch sealed United's second defeat in 24 Champions League games and ensured that Javier Irureta's side finished a face-saving third in the group.

With a place in the last eight as group winners already assured, United coach Alex Ferguson fielded a host of youngsters for the game against Deportivo, who also gave a run out to some of their squad players.

Depor's opener was made by the impressive Albert Luque, who outstripped a sluggish-looking Laurent Blanc on the right before slotting in a superb pass to the feet of the advancing Victor for a simple tap-in after 32 minutes.

The Galicians dominated possession against the inexperienced United and extended their lead two minutes after the break.

Victor teased his way past Danny Pugh on the right before sending in a neat cross to the far post where Lynch headed into his own net as he tried to fend off the waiting Luque.
