David De Gea begins contract renewal talks with Manchester United

Spanish international goalkeeper David De Gea has reportedly re-open contract renewal negotiations with Manchester United following his failed transfer to Real Madrid.

According to the BBC and various Spanish outlets, De Gea has decided to re-open contract negotiations with the Red Devils after he was left embarrassed by his failed move to Real Madrid and the player’s agent Jorge Mendes was seen at the club’s facilities on Thursday, where it was believed that the Portuguese representatives was beginning talks over an extension.

De Gea has yet to play a single match for Manchester United this season after manager Louis Van Gaal insisted that he remain in the stands and away from the team as long as he was focusing on the summer transfer deadline over his responsibilities to the team.

However, now that De Gea’s transfer has failed, Van Gaal is set to start the former Atletico Madrid youth product in their English Premier League match against Liverpool this weekend, moving Sergio Romero to the bench.

While tensions between De Gea and Van Gaal still exist, the two are working well together now and mending the relationship after the Dutchman suggested that the 24-year-old did not want to play the first two games of the season, something that was promptly denied.

There are other reports suggesting that Manchester United are interested giving De Gea a €274,000 per week salary, a total of €14,250,000 per season.
