Cruyff: Henry deserved award

Dutch great Johan Cruyff has criticised the awarding of the European Player of The Year award to Brazilian star Ronaldo.

The former Ajax idol, who himself won the trophy on three occasions, is in no doubt that Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, who finished sixth in France Football’s awards list, should have won the highly-coveted Ballon D’Or.

While Cruyff, echoing a widespread sentiment, feels that Ronaldo did not make enough of an impact throughout the year to warrant the award for the seond time in his career.

"He (Henry) is lethal and very intelligent," said Cruyff, "and appears when the team needs him."

"Ronaldo had a good World Cup but he has played very few matches this season, while Henry has had a fabulous season."
