Critics of Cristiano Ronaldo must be jealous of his achievements, Marcelo has claimed after the Portuguese forward became the first player to reach 100 European goals in Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Ronaldo scored twice as Madrid came from a goal down to take charge of the Champions League quarter-final clash.

The second-half strikes were the 32-year-old's 99th and 100th goals in European competition. And after his team-mate had turned the tie in Madrid's favour, Marcelo claimed he cannot understand why people continue to criticise the forward.

"I think they have a problem, maybe it's envy," the defender told Marca.

"I don't know what's wrong with them, he works hard and helps his team. It must be envy, you only have to look at this numbers and he still keeps on producing," he continued.

"He's happy to have scored, but he's even happier about the result."

Madrid trailed 1-0 at the midway stage of the clash at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday following Arturo Vidal's first-half header.

Zinedine Zidane's side were lucky to head in to the break only a goal down, with Vidal missing a golden opportunity to double his side's lead when he blasted a penalty over the bar just before half-time.

But after Ronaldo had levelled the scores shortly after the break, the visitors' hopes of reaching the last four were given another boost when Javi Martinez was dismissed for two yellow cards on the hour mark.

17 minutes later, Madrid's talismanic forward completed the comeback to put Madrid ahead on the night. And Marcelo was pleased with the way his side took advantage of their numerical advantage.

"We made the most of it," he said. "We put in a great performance, but we also let in a goal."
