Cristiano Ronaldo broke an incredible La Liga record against Sporting Gijon

Another Real Madrid match and another record broken by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar is in unstoppable form at the moment and scored both goals in Madrid’s 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon today.

Ronaldo netted his first goal of the afternoon from the penalty spot in the fifth minute and then doubled his advantage in the 18th minute with a well-executed diving header. Sporting pulled a goal back through Carlos Carmona in the 35th minute and had a chance to level the scores when they were awarded a penalty with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Duje Kop stepped up but missed the target with his spot-kick.

Ronaldo’s goals were ultimately enough to secure all three points for Zinedine Zidane’s La Liga leaders.

So, what record did the three-time Ballon d’Or winner break today?

His two goals meant he has now scored 31 La Liga goals over the course of 2016.

Ronaldo subsequently becomes the first player in La Liga history to score 30 or more La Liga goals in seven successive calendar years.

His record tally came during 2011 when he scored 43 league goals for Los Blancos.

Can he surpass that figure this year? The answer is almost certainly not.

Real Madrid only have to more league fixtures - against Barcelona and Deportivo - before the end of 2016.
