Court decides abandoned King's Cup tie will go ahead

The remainder of the King's Cup quarter-final tie between Valencia and Deportivo Coruna, which was stopped just before halftime, will take place on Wednesday, a Madrid court ruled on Tuesday.

The court decided that the remaining 46 minutes of the quarter-final, second leg should be played behind closed doors at Valencia's Mestalla stadium despite Deportivo's requests to postpone the game.

Last week's game was stopped by the referee when a linesman was hit on the head by an object thrown from the crowd moments after 10-man Valencia had scored to level the tie 1-1 on aggregate. Deportivo originally asked for the game to be abandoned completely with the match awarded as a victory to them.

When the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) rejected their proposal they appealed to the Spanish Sports Council (CSD) who ruled that the issue was outside their jurisdiction.

Deportivo then took the case to court in an attempt to get the game suspended until their appeal against the RFEF's decision was heard.

As a minimum requirement they wanted the last 46 minutes of the game to be played at a neutral venue behind closed doors, with Valencia forced to pay all the costs.

The court's ruling means that the remainder of the game will now take place as planned on Wednesday at 2100 GMT with the winner meeting Espanyol in the semi-final.

Barcelona host Real Zaragoza in the other quarter-final, second leg on Wednesday. The Catalans will have to overturn a 4-2 first leg deficit if they are to meet arch-rivals Real Madrid in the semis.
