Copa Del Rey Wrap: Barca Bow Out, Real Slam Eight Past S.S.Reyes

Barcelona are out of the Copa del Rey after an embarrassing 3-2 defeat to Novelda.

Goals from Geovanni and Riquelme were not enough as a hat-trick from Madrigal gave the lower league side a stunning victory.

Real Madrid progressed to the next round of the Copa del Rey with an 8-1 hammering of S.S.Reyes.

The minnows took a shock lead in the 12th minute through Roa, but goals from Tote (3), Portillo (2), Solari and Morientes (2) gave the Merengues the victory.

Deportivo progressed with a 2-1 win over Corralejo thanks to goals from new-boy Luque and Sergio. Valencia went through on penalties after a 0-0 draw with Gimnastic.

Atletico Madrid qualified thanks to a 2-1 win at Lanzarote. Torres and Movilla were the men on target.

Fellow Liga sides Real Sociedad, Espanyol and Rayo Vallecano were not as lucky. Sociedad were beaten 3-1 at Zaragoza, while Espanyol lost 1-0 to Alicante. Gartano scored the only goal after 80 minutes. Rayo lost to Cultural Leonesa.

Real Betis eased past Jerez 3-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Argentine striker Gaston Casas. Celta Vigo squeezed past Burgos thanks to a lone Edu strike, while Athletic Bilbao edged through after goals from Guerrero and Urzaiz gave them a 2-1 win at Amurrio.

Other matches of note saw Sevilla beat Real Jaen, Mallorca see-off Atletico Gramanet, Malaga go through on penalties against Extremadura and Valladolid eliminate Sporting Gijon.

On Tuesday Villarreal were beaten by Hercules.
