Copa Del Rey Third Round Wrap: Murcia Stun Alaves

Second division Murcia caused the upset of the round as they recorded a stunning 2-1 second leg victory over Alaves.

Goals from David Karanka and Josep Setvalls stunned the Basque Country side after they went into the game as favourites following a goalless first game last week.

The home side dominated possession, but failed to turn that into clear opportunities and Murcia took advantage. The opener came eight minutes after the break from Karanka, who is on loan from Athletic Bilbao. A strong Alaves side pulled level through Ruben Navarro with 19 minutes left and looked to be heading for a likely winner. But it came at the other end when Setvalls stole forward from midfield and netted for Murcia.

The visitors even had Jose Luis Acciari dismissed in the final minutes but held on to reach the quarter finals.

Luis Alcaraz secured himself some more time in charge of Recreativo as his side beat Andalucian rivals Real Betis 1-0 in the Nuevo Colombino. The first game in Seville ended goalless and both sides desperately need a victory here, but for very different reasons. Betis knew their only chance of silverware was in the Copa del Rey, while Recre's boss was desperate to keep himself in a job after calls for his head have been made following the team's dismal display in the league. Raul Molina snatched the match-winning goal seven minutes from time leaving coach Alcaraz in such a state that he was sent off in injury time.

Carlos Domingues Domingues sunk Valladolid single-handedly with a devastating hat-trick to put Mallorca's season back on track. The Balearic side hammered their Castillian opponents 4-1 in the Jose Zorilla after a 2-2 in Mallorca. Carlos' treble came inside the first 32 minutes and effectively killed of the tie by the time Oscar Gonzalez netted for the home side four minutes after the break. Harold Lozano completed the rout with Mallorca's fourth minutes later.

Alicante were finally swept aside, 4-1, by the Copa del Rey holders, Deportivo La Coruna, but only after an early scare. Toro Acuna put the home side into a 2-1 aggregate lead before Manolo Perez silenced the Riazor crowd with an equaliser midway through the first half. But that was the last time the visitors were allowed such breathing space and goals from Jose Amavisca, Diego Tristan from the penalty spot and Albert Luque saw the top flight side through to the last eight.

Atletico Madrid overcame second division hopefuls Xerez 3-0 in El Calderon thanks to two goals from Javi Moreno and a single from Juan Carlos Aguilera. The visitors' coach Bernd Schuster was shown a red card, for protesting, after just 27 minutes.

A full-strength Osasuna saved themselves from an embarrassing defeat with a late goal in a 1-1 draw with Real Union. A Jusue own goal gave the Irun side the lead before half time and that looked to be enough to give them an historic victory. But Inaki Munoz levelled for Osasuna in 89th minute. Osasuna's place in the quarter finals was never in doubt though, after their 4-0 first leg victory.

Sevilla completed the formalties in their tie with Valladolid as they won 2-1 thanks to goals from David Arteaga and Moises. Sergio Sestelo reduced the arrears, but the Andalucians cruised through 5-2 on aggregate.
