Copa Del Rey QF Report: Real Madrid v Mallorca

Real Madrid will have to draft in a few first team regulars if they are to qualify for the semi-finals of the Copa Del Rey after the first leg against Mallorca ended 1-1 in the Bernabeu.

Vicente Del Bosque included Brazilians Roberto Carlos, Flavio Conceicao and Ronaldo in what was otherwise a second string team and the visitors took full advantage.

Things started well for the European champions when Javier Portillo gave them a 13th minute lead as he connected with a Raul Bravo cross to steer the ball past Leo Franco.

But instead of pushing forward Madrid looked to play the possession game and to sit back on their lead.

But the Balearic outfit had other ideas and Ariel Ibagaza drove them forward.

Samuel Eto'o had a goal disallowed seven minutes before the interval, but Mallorca did not have to wait long before they deservedly drew level.

After 57 minutes Miguel Angel Nadal stole forward to net for the visitors and his effort drew whistles from the home supporters.

Del Bosque reacted quickly by introducing Luis Figo and Raul into the fray, but even the experienced duo could not give Real the upper hand.

Mallorca should be wary though. In the league encounter at Son Moix before Christmas, the Madrilenians ran out 5-1 victors.
