Madrid announced their return to form before Christmas by thrashing the islanders 5-1 at Son Moix. A result that sent shock waves through the rest of La Liga, and Mallorca itching for revenge. For the score line somewhat flattered the Merengues.
Vicente Del Bosque will once again rest several players, although Roberto Carlos and the in-form Flavio are expected to start. No place for Fernando Morientes, though, as the striker is injured. This game would have been one of the few opportunities to impress coach Vicente del Bosque.
For Mallorca, this competition represents a route into Europe, in case their league campaign falters and they finish outside the Uefa Cup places. There is every chance of this occurring, too. Thrashings against Barcelona and Sevilla, as well as a home draw against Recreativo of late are hardly the type of results to inspire confidence.
