Chevanton strike leaves Real Madrid stunned

A super scissor-kick from Ernesto Chevanton condemned Real Madrid to a shock 2-1 defeat to Sevilla last night.
 
Chevanton claimed the headlines with a well-executed finish after first-half strikes from recalled Real midfielder David Beckham and Sevilla striker Fredi Kanoute had cancelled each other out.

Beckham, a fringe player in Real's domestic campaign to date, kept his place in the side following an eye-catching performance in the Champions League draw against Dynamo Kyiv and made an immediate impact.
 
He opened the scoring in the 13th minute when he scored direct from a free-kick for his second league goal of the year.

It was not one to add to the former England captain's impressive scrapbook, as he swung the ball in from the flank hoping to find a team-mate in the Sevilla box.

But nobody met the ball as it curled into the area and with home keeper Andres Palop standing off his line Beckham's cross nestled in the top corner.

Afterwards, Real coach Fabio Capello lamented: "A draw would have been the fair result, but this is football."

"Their first goal came from a rebound, and the second after a great effort from Chevanton following a free-kick."

"We had the chance to score our second goal through Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo, but it was not to be."

"I am satisfied with the display of the team," asserted the Italian, much to the surprise of those around. "We can look ahead without worrying. This is football; we had the chance to score, but did not take them."

"Sevilla are a team with very fast players, who play some good football, but they did not have as many chances today, because Casillas was not forced into saves."
