Champions Porto sweep honours at UEFA Gala awards

Porto, who won the European Champions League last season, swept most of the inidvidual honours at the UEFA Gala awards ceremony on Thursday.

Deco, who has since moved to Barcelona, was named the competition's Most Valuable Player and best midfielder, Vitor Baia was named best goalkeeper and Ricardo Carvalho, who is now with Chelsea, was named best defender.

The only non-Porto player to win an individual award was Fernando Morientes, who played for AS Monaco in last season's competition, scoring nine goals while on loan from Real Madrid.

He also scored two goals against Real when Monaco beat them on the away goals rule in the quarter-finals en route to the final where they lost to Porto.

Morientes is now back at Real Madrid helping them try to win the European Cup for an unequalled 10th time this season.

Greece's winning performance in Euro 2004 was also rewarded on Thursday when Theo Zagorakis was presented with his trophy as Player of the Tournament while Otto Rehhagel received his award as the Champion coach.

Gilberto Madail, the president of the Portuguese FA was presented with a special award by UEFA president Lennart Johansson for successfully staging the tournament.
