Celta Vigo back in Spanish top flight

Celta Vigo returned to the Primera Liga after just a season in the second division thanks to a 3-1 win away to Xerez on Sunday.

Two goals from Uruguayan midfielder Fabian Canobbio and another from striker Jesus Perera gave the Galicians a comfortable victory that left them with 76 points from 40 games, seven ahead of fourth placed Recreativo Huelva with two games left to play.

The Galician side played in the Champions League last season but were unable to cope with the added burden of European competition and dropped into the second division for the first time in 13 seasons.

Basque side Alaves, who are run by controversial Ukrainian-born American businessman Dmitry Piterman, and Cadiz are the favourites to join Celta in the Primera Liga next season, although Recreativo and Eibar also have a chance of claiming a place in the top flight.
