Campo eyed as Stam's replacement

Premiership dons Manchester United are eyeing Ivan Campo as a possible replacement for Dutch international Jaap Stam following his move to Lazio.

Campo's agent, Miguel Angel Cermeño confirmed the news when he told Onefootball on Tuesday: "I know Manchester United are thinking about signing Ivan Campo. I have good contacts in England but any deal will depend on Real Madrid."

"The player has attracted a lot of interest from England through his impressive performances in the Champions League."

Cermeño added that he has no idea how Real will react to the news but if the recent dealings with the player are anything to go by then the answer will be a resounding 'no'.

Real Sociedad chief John Toshack saw his bid for Campo turned down last June and neighbouring Basques, Athletic Club Bilbao were also given the brush off.

Real Madrid decided that it may be wise to hold on to the 27-year-old former Valencia and Mallorca stopper as a handy understudy to central defensive duo Aitor Karanka and Fernando Hierro.

Inter Milan were also told to forget about signing the player when they came in with an offer earlier this month.
