Campbell too expensive, say Bayern

Bayern Munich vice-president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has dismissed reports linking the club with a move for England defender Sol Campbell. "He is too expensive," he said.

The club's president Franz Beckenbauer had earlier on Sunday hinted that the European champions were still in the hunt for the out-of-contract Tottenham star.

He said: "Yes, we've bid for Campbell. He's a very sought-after man, he is absolutely world-class."

Rummenigge, however, was quick to clarify Bayern's position - and revealed that the bid for the player had been some time ago.

He said: "We were interested in Campbell three months back, but not anymore. Such a signing would create problems in this club."

"He was too expensive. If he wants £5.8 million what should someone like Kahn be paid?"

The German giants have been linked with Campbell before, but their interest appeared to have waned as Barcelona, Internazionale, and Arsenal have all publicly stepped up their challenge for the 26-year-old.

In May Spurs revealed that Campbell had wanted a massive £20 million three-year deal to stay at White Hart Lane.

The player was so angry about the club's claim he said he would never consider playing for Spurs again whatever the circumstances.

Campbell, meanwhile, had initially said he would make an announcement about his future on Sunday - the day his contract ran out - but it now seems that he will continue to keep the chasing pack guessing for a little while longer.

Inter president Massimo Moratti, however, appears to have no doubts where Campbell will choose to play his football next season.

He declared: "We will get Campbell."
