Campbell snub leaves Spanish door open

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's decision not to enter the wage war bidding for Sol Campbell has left the door wide open for Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Gunners' chairman Peter Hill-Wood has backed his manager, who baulked at the wage demands, saying:"We cannot pay that sort of money because we'd just go bust.

"If you start paying one player £80,000 a week, everyone else wants it."

Now, with Barcelona president Joan Gaspart ready to travel to London for talks with Campbell and his agent Sky Andrews, Real Madrid are reported to have joined the chase for the Bosman signing of the 26 year old Campbell.

Real are said to be ready to match Barca's £100,000 a week pay offer and will also hand Campbell a massive £5m signing on fee.
