Betis showed Madrid the way and beat them 3-1

Zinedine Zidane's first competitive goal for Real was not enough as Betis showed Madrid the way and beat them 3-1 on Saturday.

Betis' victory means that Real have now lost two in this season's competition.

Madrid coach Vicente Del Bosque completely changed his 4-4-2 system for the game, disposing of the midfield double pivot in favour of a 4-3-1-1 formation with Zidane playing behind lone striker Raul Gonzalez.

Real started well and have certainly improved from their shaky start to the new season. However, Del Bosque still has problems fitting new-boy Zidane into the side without disrupting what was, for the past two seasons, a very good side. His tactical changes back fired as Betis took an early lead after an atrocious defensive error from Ivan Campo, who allowed Gaston Casas to fire past 'keeper Cesar Sanchez.

The lead was short-lived however, as some neat interplay across the edge of the Betis box from Real's Guti and Raul left Zidane free to slice home his first goal for his new employers since signing from Juventus.

Real struggled against a stubborn Betis side who gave the visitors little room to improvise during the remainder of the half. Jesus Capi was on hand to put Betis ahead five minutes after the re-start, twisting and turning through the Real back-line to fire low inside the right post. Joaquin Sanchez added a third for the home side seven minutes later as the winger was left unmarked at the right edge of the box to rifle home the winner for the Sevillianos.

Real fought back but without any real conviction. Raul thought he had netted a second for the visitors only to see his goal disallowed for offside. The result is bound to raise questions about Real Madrid's defence, who gifted Betis with three goals and added to the controversial start to the season from last year's champions.
