France Football magazine will poll sports journalists from 51 countries, and it seems that Figo is trying to influence the impressionable hacks with his outlandish statements. Figo claims Ryan Giggs is United’s best player, but more convincingly argues that Raul deserves to win the coveted award.
It seems as if it may turn into a straight fight between Raul and Becks, although there are 50 nominations to choose from. Roma coach Fabio Capello certainly agrees with that assessment, so at least someone recognises Beckham’s talent.
After virtually single-handedly making sure England qualified for the World Cup, Becks has become a national hero. In fact, since he became England skipper, many have noticed a significant transformation that has changed him from being a very good player with a petulant attitude into a world beater, who generates more than his fair share of positive vibrations around the England camp.
If Becks can win the award, he will join illustrious company. United legends of the past like George Best and Bobby Charlton spring to mind, when the European Player of the Year award is mentioned. For somebody that supposedly has no left foot, to even be in contention for such an honour is an achievement.
