Beckham's fancy Footwork brings him off-field earnings of £6.7m

David Beckham continued his winning streak off the pitch last year, increasing his earnings from commercial activities, such as sponsorship and advertisements, by 148 per cent.

Figures filed yesterday at Companies House for Footwork Productions show that the Real Madrid "galactico" generated £8.7m in commercial activities, providing him with a pay packet of £5.5m in the year to 30 April, 2003. He also took a dividend from the business worth £1.2m, bringing his total earnings from non-football activities to £6.7m for the year.

These earnings were on top of his salary at Manchester United. Since the figures were compiled, the midfield star has moved to Spain and last October it was announced that he would not be taking on any new commercial activity. However, the accounts for Footwork Productions, formed to handle his commercial work, show that advertising and sponsorship deals with the likes of Vodafone, Adidas, Marks & Spencer and Pepsi are likely to keep Mr Beckham's bank account in a healthy state for some time to come.

Of the £8.7m Footwork Productions revealed as turnover, £6.9m went on "administrative expenses". The notes to the accounts reveal the company paid director's remuneration of £5.5m, compared with £2.8m in 2002.

Mr Beckham was the sole director of the company, as well as the only shareholder. However, a reorganisation after the end of the financial year has seen Mr Beckham stand down as a director to be replaced by his wife, Victoria, and Andrew Thompson, a lawyer.

The company has been formed with its principal activity as the "provision of the services of David Beckham", and there is no doubt that being David Beckham is extremely profitable.

The company's accounts show that after administrative expenses it made pre-tax profits of £1.8m. Under the section of the accounts detailing related party transactions, the company reveals that Mr Beckham's current account had a credit balance of £451,399.
