Beckham looks for supporting role at Real

England captain David Beckham is hoping to escape the glitz and media glare and get back to playing football after completing his move from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

"I haven't come here to be a great star," said Beckham, who was certainly presented like one at a glossy ceremony at Real's basketball pavilion on Wednesday.

"I'm here to be part of a teamfull of great players, who are stars but above all are excellent players."

Beckham is the fourth world class player to join Real Madrid in three years, following the arrivals of Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo.

New Real coach Carlos Queiroz could have a problem in finding space for Figo and Beckham in his midfield and the England man recognised he would have to fight for his place.

"We haven't talked about my position," said Beckham, who was speaking in an interview with Real Madrid TV. "The first thing I'll have to do is battle to win a place in the team, just like everyone else."

"All the players have to fight to be in the starting line-up and that's what makes the team so great and helps them win so many titles."

Beckham will have a familiar face on the training field when he reports back for Real's pre-season later in July, with former Manchester United assistant manager Queiroz recently installed as coach in place of Vicente del Bosque.

Beckham said he was as surprised as anyone by Queiroz's appointment but recognised the presence of the Portuguese coach would be a help.

"The truth is I was a bit surprised that Carlos came to Madrid," Beckham said.

"It's a challenge for him and will be a help to me while I still don't speak Spanish. It will be good to have him alongside me early on."

"At Manchester United he did a lot of work with the defence but also in other areas. In this team, with so many good players, I'm sure he'll do very well. It's a good team to coach."

Beckham said learning Spanish would be a priority.

"It will be important for me to express myself in Spanish as soon as possible," he said. "I'll make a real effort because it will help me to integrate.

"Signing for Real Madrid is a challenge in family as well as footballing terms. It's a new life for me and my wife and children -- new schools, new customs. It's a new life and I'm looking forward to starting it."
