Atletico Madrid bid to host 2004 Champions league final

The Spanish Federation (RFEF) has put forward Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon stadium as a candidate to host the 2004 UEFA Champions League final.

The stadium, which has a capacity of 54,850 and was in April given five-star status, was put forward for the 2003 final, which was won by Manchester United’s Old Trafford.

It will be up against eight rival candidates for 2004:

The Olimpiastadion in Berlin (Hertha Berlin); Arena AufSchalke (Schalke 04); AOL Arena (Hamburg SV); Amsterdam Arena (Ajax); Luzhniki stadium, Moscow; Lokomotiv Moscow‘s stadium; Stade de France; and the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.

The RFEF has also proposed the stadium for 2005, for which bids from the Ernst Happel stadium, Vienna and the three Portuguese stadia of Benfica, Sporting and Porto have also been made.
