Alaves and Celta join top-flight Cup victims

Alaves and Celta Vigo became the latest first division sides to fall victim to lower ranked opponents in the third round of the Spanish King's Cup on Wednesday.

Peruvian midfielder Pablo Zegarra's dramatic last-gasp extra-time strike gave second division Salamanca their narrow 1-0 win over Celta, who have struggled to find form since they were knocked out of the UEFA Cup at the beginning of the month.

Alaves, riding high in second place in the league table, were brought firmly down to earth with a 2-0 defeat at Sporting Gijon.

Two second-half goals from Jose Luis Soto secured Sporting's win over the side who have the best defensive record in the league.

The defeats for Alaves and Celta meant that a total of 12 first division sides, including Barcelona and holders Real Zaragoza, have been eliminated from this year's competition.

Real Mallorca narrowly escaped becoming the 13th casualty against third division Ceuta, eventually winning through 5-4 after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.

First division leaders Deportivo Coruna were given a run for their money after they fell behind to a 72nd minute goal from Cultural Leonesa.

But Spanish international striker Diego Tristan showed his class by notching two goals in the space of five minutes to secure a 2-1 win for the Galician side.

Real Madrid safely negotiated their way through to the last 16 with a 3-1 win over a battling Lanzarote thanks to goals from Albert Celades, Guti and Francisco Pavon.

Lanzarote, who crushed first division neighbours Tenerife 5-1 in the second round, began in highly motivated fashion, looking more comfortable on their own artificial pitch than their more illustrious rivals.

It was Real, however, who took the lead in the 25th minute, Celades heading home after his first shot had been parried by Marino and Santiago Solari's follow-up header had rebounded off the bar.

Real, however, were not allowed to settle and it was no more than the home side deserved when they equalised four minutes before the break.

Torres headed neatly into the path of the speedy Vladimir, who caught the Real defence on their heels and clipped the ball over the stranded Cesar into the far corner of the net.

After an uneasy start to the second half a 59th-minute strike from Guti finally settled Real's nerves, and young defender Pavon scored with a header from a Luis Figo corner 17 minutes from time.

The three remaining third-round ties will be played on Thursday.
