Casillas Hails Important Away Win

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas praised his team’s resolve for the suffering they had to endure to clinch a hard fought away win at Zenit St. Petersburg on Tuesday evening.

Los Merengues finally ended their away game jinx when they battled hard to scrape a 1-2 at a demanding Zenit St. Petersburg to maintain their 100% start to the Champions League season.

It wasn’t the prettiest nor the most convincing of wins but goalkeeper and captain for the night, Iker Casillas still welcomed the three points as an important triumph.

“It has been a very tough victory. Zenit have a very good team and they have demonstrated that they can attack with speed and danger, although at the back they are slightly weaker,” the stand-in skipper said during the post-match conference.

“In the end, we had to suffer a lot because it has been a crazy game, with more than thirty shots at goal between both teams."

“But the most important thing is that we have won on the road. Last year we were unable to win away from home so for us, these are three very important points,” he stressed.

Defender Pepe, on the other hand, praised his teammates upfront for their decisiveness and effectiveness, which he believed won them the game, but he also defended the team occasionally drifting out of the contest.

“We have fought hard for the win in a very complicated match. We have been playing a lot of games so it’s logical to that we play at a lower rate at certain moments."

“It’s not necessary to worry because it’s a normal thing,” the Portuguese assured.

The vital away victory will give Bernd Schuster’s men a huge boost as they visit Turin next (22nd October) to face Juventus in what will undoubtedly be the clash of Matchday Three.
