ALAVES 0 BARCELONA 0
Argentine international Roberto Bonano frustrated former club Barcelona's hopes of getting their title defence off to a winning start by producing an inspired display in the Alaves goal, stopping everything his old team could throw at him.

VALENCIA 1 REAL BETIS 0
Valencia made amends for the midweek defeat by Hamburg SV in the Intertoto Cup with this win at home to Champions League side Betis.
Argentine midfielder Pablo Aimar notched the only goal when he curled in a right-foot strike after neat control inside the area eight minutes after the break.
But keeper Santiago Canizares did well to stop Betis grabbing a late equaliser.
