Time for Carlo Ancelotti to rest Real Madrid’s €24m-rated veteran before it’s too late

Veteran defender Antonio Rudiger has been nothing short of exceptional in recent weeks, proving to be an invaluable asset for both Real Madrid and the German national team.

The centre-back’s relentless performances have earned him well-deserved praise as he continues to dominate on the pitch despite playing through an injury.

For Madrid, Rudiger delivered a masterclass in the UEFA Champions League clashes against Atletico Madrid, showcasing his defensive brilliance while battling fitness concerns.

His commitment was further highlighted when he stepped up to convert the decisive penalty, underlining his leadership and resilience.

Meanwhile, the international break saw more of the same from him, as he played 180 minutes for Germany, helping the Die Mannschaft secure a historic place in the Nations League semi-finals for the first time.

Despite his immense workload, the 32-year-old remains a machine. He has accumulated 3,419 minutes this season—only trailing Kylian Mbappe (3,586) and Federico Valverde (3,694).

However, unlike the younger duo, Rudiger’s durability at his age is remarkable. His only notable injury sidelined him for the first leg against Manchester City and the La Liga derby at the Bernabeu, but he has otherwise been a rock in defence.

Carlo Ancelotti has relied heavily on the German’s consistency, which has allowed other defenders like Ferland Mendy to settle in and given David Alaba time to recover without being rushed back.

His presence has also provided cover for Aurelien Tchouameni, who has faced criticism from the Bernabeu crowd. Whether in the starting XI or coming off the bench, Rudiger has consistently delivered when Madrid needed him most.

As the season enters its decisive phase, the German centre-back will once again be crucial. However, Ancelotti must know when to rest his German warrior or fatigue will kick in at any time.

With a Copa del Rey semi-final and a potential final on April 26, plus a high-stakes Champions League clash against an Arsenal side averaging two goals per game, Rudiger’s resilience and leadership will be vital for Madrid’s success.
