Five things Real Madrid stand to gain or lose against Atletico Madrid

The upcoming clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 is far more than just another football match.

This tie will have a major impact on both clubs, not only in terms of their European campaign but also in shaping the trajectory of their entire season.

The outcome of these two matches could determine how successful or disastrous the season turns out to be for both teams, making it a highly significant encounter.

A loss at this stage, especially against their city rivals, could throw their entire season into turmoil and raise serious doubts about the direction of the project at the club.

On that note, here we take a look at what is at stake for Real Madrid against Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid are known for their dominance in the Champions League, a competition they have won a record number of times.

Early exits are simply not acceptable for a club of their stature, particularly given the financial investment made in the squad.

According to Transfermarkt, Real Madrid have assembled the second most expensive squad in world football, with a total market value of around €1.23 billion. Only Manchester City, the reigning European champions, have a higher valuation.

In comparison, Atletico Madrid’s squad is valued at just €496.8 million, making Real Madrid the clear favourites on paper.

Florentino Perez has made significant efforts to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level, and with Kylian Mbappe, an early Champions League exit would be a major blow to the club’s image.

The Champions League is not just about prestige; it is also a crucial revenue source for top clubs.

Last season, Real Madrid earned approximately €120 million from their journey to the final. Every stage of the competition brings significant financial rewards, and the club has already secured over €49 million from this edition.

Progressing to the quarter-finals would bring an additional €12.5 million while reaching the semi-finals would add another €15 million to their earnings.

The financial incentives increase further with €18.5 million awarded for reaching the final and €25 million given to the tournament winners.

A deep run in the competition is therefore vital for Real Madrid, not just for sporting success but also for maintaining financial stability and funding future investments.

Real Madrid’s project took a significant leap forward with the addition of young stars like Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo and Mbappe.

The club’s vision is to dominate European football once again, but their performances this season have been inconsistent.

Although recent displays have shown improvement, there are still concerns about the overall balance of the team.

An early elimination from the Champions League would trigger several questions: Should Carlo Ancelotti remain as manager? Can the attacking trio coexist effectively? Does the squad need adjustments in the summer transfer window?

Are some players overvalued? A poor result in this tie would intensify scrutiny on the club’s long-term project and raise doubts about whether further reinforcements are necessary.

Being knocked out by Atletico Madrid at this stage of the competition would be a huge psychological setback.

The Champions League is regarded as Real Madrid’s favourite competition, and their players often raise their level in these high-stakes matches. If they were to be eliminated, it could seriously dent team morale and shake confidence.

Additionally, criticism from the media and supporters would be inevitable. The squad is filled with young talents who, despite being accustomed to pressure, could be affected by the backlash.

On the other hand, overcoming Atletico Madrid would provide a major morale boost and reinforce the belief that Real Madrid are among the favourites to lift the trophy once again.

The result of this tie will have a direct influence on Real Madrid’s performances in other competitions, particularly La Liga.

An early exit could have two potential consequences: either the team will focus entirely on LaLiga and take advantage of any slip-ups by their rivals, or the disappointment of elimination will negatively impact their domestic campaign.

So far this season, Real Madrid have shown signs of inconsistency in La Liga, at times appearing uninspired in their performances.

If they are left with only La Liga and the Copa del Rey as their primary targets before the Club World Cup in the summer, it could be difficult for the squad to maintain motivation.

Furthermore, in the league title race, they currently do not have full control over their destiny, meaning they must rely on results elsewhere to go in their favour.
