Transfer rumours

Florentino Perez has new reason to publicly humiliate Liverpool with Trent Alexander-Arnold

Florentino Perez has just been re-elected as Real Madrid president and would no doubt love to kick off his latest term with a marquee signing like Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Real Madrid's interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold is well documented, and the Spanish club is apparently preparing for a fresh approach to sign the Liverpool right-back this month.

A report by Marca last week said that Madrid is keen to strengthen its defensive options in January and is willing to part with a transfer fee to land Alexander-Arnold — despite the fact he is set to be available for free at the end of the campaign.

A deal will almost certainly not materialize this month (Liverpool swiftly rebuffed an approach from Madrid earlier in the window), but Florentino Perez now has an extra incentive to land the England international.

Snaring Alexander-Arnold in January would be a huge statement of intent and give a public smack in the mouth to one of Madrid's main rivals on the European stage, and that is exactly the kind of move that Perez would love to pull off after being re-elected as the Madrid president for another four years.

Perez, who first became Madrid president in 2000 and has spent just three years out of the role since then, faced no opposition as he secured the position until 2029, when he will be 81 years old.

Madrid is known for its marquee signings, and Perez has been responsible for many of them, with Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo Nazario and Kylian Mbappe among the names that have arrived in the Spanish capital on his Watch.

Delivering on transfers has been a major aspect of Perez's success during his Madrid presidency, and he would no doubt like to mark securing another term with a major signing this month.

Alexander-Arnold has remained tight-lipped on what he wants to do, and many Liverpool fans fear that his silence is telling, but surely he would not want to leave Anfield before securing a second Premier League title of his career.

Still, even if Alexander-Arnold doesn't leave Liverpool midway through the season, Perez usually gets what he wants, and it's starting to feel like it would be a surprise to see the right-back playing in a red shirt at the beginning of next season.
