Former Real Madrid defender could be an option for January

Real Madrid may look to bring back 22-year-old Rafa Marin to bolster their defence this January, according to recent reports from Jose Luis Sanchez.

Marin, a former youth player at Real Madrid, moved to Napoli in the summer for a fee of €12 million. However, it is suggested that he may not have found his place within the Napoli squad, where he has struggled for game time this season.

Since joining Napoli, Marin has managed just a single appearance, playing 86 minutes in a second-round Coppa Italia clash against Palermo.

Despite Napoli’s active schedule, he has yet to be included in any Serie A matchday lineup, either as a starter or a substitute.

This limited role at Napoli has raised questions about his future there, and Madrid may see an opportunity to bring him back.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid currently face a pressing issue with defensive depth, especially after the severe injury to Eder Militao. Losing Militao has left a significant gap in the defence, one that has yet to be adequately addressed.

Although Real Madrid have explored options like Jonathan Tah and Aymeric Laporte, negotiations for these players have reportedly hit obstacles.

It must be noted that Marin’s transfer to Napoli included a series of buyback clauses that could ease his potential return to Madrid.

While the initial fee was €12 million, the agreement allows Napoli to increase the cost to €22 million by 2025 if they wish to buy out the buyback terms.

However, Real Madrid’s buyback options for Marin stand at €25 million for 2026 and €35 million for 2027, giving the club flexibility to secure him in the near future if his development aligns with their needs.

Given his familiarity with Madrid’s youth system and his current struggle to find a spot at Napoli, Rafa Marin’s return could be a timely, strategic move to address Real Madrid’s defensive needs.

This potential transfer, while practical for both clubs, would also allow Marin a chance to re-establish himself within a team where he spent his formative years, making it a win-win for all involved.
