Primera Liga reports

Brief reports of matches played in the Primera Liga this weekend:

Played on Sunday:

ATHLETIC BILBAO 0 RACING SANTANDER 0

Bilbao had midfielder Igor Gabilondo sent off after 39 minutes but still created the best chances against Racing. However, despite their pressure they failed again to register a first home win of the season.

ESPANYOL 1 VALENCIA 1

Espanyol opened the scoring when midfielder Albert Riera bundled a loose ball into the net as Santiago Canizares could only parry Ivan de la Pena's freekick in the 22nd minute.

Valencia levelled three minutes before the break when Carlos Kameni got his hand to David Silva's shot, only to see it bounce over the line.

Eight minutes into the second half Espanyol lost Riera to a harsh red card but they hung on for their fifth consecutive draw.

REAL MADRID 1 CELTA VIGO 2

Real's Fabio Capello suffered his first defeat at the Bernabeu in both spells as coach, as Celta snatched the game from under their noses.

Celta's first attack in the 35th minute led to the opening goal when Fabian Canobbio crossed for Br azilian Nene to steer home.

Real equalised when Br azilian Emerson headed in Raul's corner just before the break, but Celta midfielder Jorge struck the winner eight minutes from time, stroking Angel's cross wide of Iker Casillas.

REAL ZARAGOZA 3 GETAFE 1

Getafe faced an uphill struggle from the 11th minute when defender Ruben Pulido was sent off for a professional foul on Sergio Garcia.

Uruguayan Carlos Diogo volleyed home from a corner to put Zaragoza in front after 39 minutes, but Getafe's Manu del Moral levelled from the penalty spot in the 68th.

As Getafe tired Zaragoza's Argentine striker Diego Milito burst clear in the 74th to fire home off the far post, and Br azilian Ewerthon hammered a 20-metre drive for the third in the final minute.

RECREATIVO HUELVA 2 GIMNASTIC 1

Recre won this battle between the promoted clubs to keep Gimnastic deep in trouble in 19th place.

Striker Irurzun volleyed the visitors in front after just seven minutes but the league's leakiest defence did not hold out for long. Recre's Santi Cazorola crossed for Javi Guerrero to flick a cheeky equaliser just after the half-hour mark.

Gimnastic had defender Miguel Angel Llera sent off nine minutes from time and Recre defender Mario volleyed the winner from a corner in stoppage time.

SEVILLA 2 OSASUNA 0

Sevilla climbed to the top with their fifth straight home win of the season against a misfiring Osasuna who are having problems scoring goals.

Mali striker Frederic Kanoute scored from the penalty spot in the 50th minute after Renato was fouled and he fed Br azilian Adriano Correia for the second two minutes from time.

VILLARREAL 3 REAL BETIS 2

Betis's Javier Irureta was celebrating his 600th match as a Primera Liga coach and saw his side take a fourth-minute lead when Edu headed Capi's free kick in at the near post.

Villarreal's Juan Roman Riquelme threaded a pass for Uruguayan Diego Forlan to equalise in the 20th, but Betis re-established their lead when Alberto Rivera nodded in from close range three minutes after the restart.

French defender Pascal Cygan headed Villarreal level again in the 57th and a minute later substitute Cani scored the winner with a header after a poor clearance.

Played Saturday:

DEPORTIVO CORUNA 1 BARCELONA 1

Depor had won all four home games before this match and their confidence showed as they put Barca under intense pressure throughout the game.

Barca went ahead, however, when Juanma's late challenge on striker Javier Saviola in the area after 40 minutes led to a penalty which Ronaldinho converted.

Depor's hard work was rewarded in the 73rd minute, though, as Joan Verdu was brought down in the area by Edmilson. Victor Valdes saved Fabian Estoyanoff's spot kick but Juan Rodriguez managed to steer the rebound into the net.

LEVANTE 2 REAL SOCIEDAD 0

Sociedad's appointment of Miguel Angel Lotina as coach two weeks ago has had little effect as the league's bottom club slipped to another defeat.

Levante's Cameroon striker Albert Meyong Ze slammed home a rebound from close range in the 40th minute, after Felix Ettien's powerful header from a corner was blocked on the line.

Four minutes from time former Italy international Damiano Tomassi defied a dreadful pitch to go past two defenders and cross for Frenchman Laurent Courtois to volley home.

REAL MALLORCA 0 ATLETICO MADRID 0

Atletico have now gone four league and cup games without a goal and rarely looked like scoring in this niggly, error-strewn match.

Mallorca hit a post through Bosko Jankovic in the first half, while Atletico's best moments came when Argentine striker Sergio Aguero was brought on in the second half.
