Brief reports of Primera Liga matches played this weekend:
ATHLETIC BILBAO 0 OSASUNA 0
Stalemate at San Mames in a regional derby high on energy and effort but low on scoring chances.
Athletic dominated the first half but faded in the second and Osasuna came close to snatching the win at the death. Bilbao centre-back Aitor Ocio was sent off in added time after picking up a second yellow card.
DEPORTIVO CORUNA 0 ALMERIA 3
Almeria got off to a great start on their return to the top flight after a 26-year absence with this thumping away victory.
Former Real Madrid reserve team striker Alvaro Negredo put the visitors in front when he sneaked in between two defenders to steer home a low shot after 19 minutes.
Fernando Soriano added a second late in the first half, pouncing on an error by keeper Dudu Aouate to clip home on the turn and fellow midfielder Albert Crusat made it 3-0 when he drilled in with an angled shot in the second half.
ESPANYOL 0 VALLADOLID 1
Striker Joseba Llorente earned Valladolid a win on their return to the top flight when he steered in from five metres out after midfielder Daniel Kome had broken free down the right and hit a low cross into the area early in the second half.
RACING SANTANDER 0 BARCELONA 0
A lethargic performance from a much-vaunted Barcelona side. They were outplayed by unfancied Racing who were reduced to 10 men with the sending off of Polish midfielder Ebi Smolarek midway through the second half.
Barca had the lion's share of the possession but rarely troubled Racing keeper Tono, while the home side had a host of scoring chances and can count themselves unlucky to have only come away with a point.
REAL MALLORCA 3 LEVANTE 0
An emphatic win for the islanders who took the lead when Argentine playmaker Ariel Ibagaza converted a controversial penalty in the 25th minute after Tuni appeared to dive into a Levante defender.
New signing Daniel Guiza made it 2-0 early in the second half and Ibagaza claimed his second 19 mins from time when he smashed high into the net.
RECREATIVO HUELVA 1 REAL BETIS 1
Honours even in this Andalucian duel which saw the return of coaches Hector Cuper and Victor Munoz to the Primera Liga.
Munoz's Recreativo took the lead midway through the first half when French striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle finished off an intricate passing move in the area.
Betis levelled the game six minutes before halftime when defender Nano rose above a forest of defenders to head in from a corner.
VALENCIA 0 VILLARREAL 3
Villarreal, who won eight games on the trot at the end of last season, picked up where they left off against Valencia who had striker David Villa and midfielder Joaquin sent off.
Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson put the visitors ahead with a neat finish from a tight angle after rounding keeper Santiago Canizares in the 16th minute.
Striker Giuseppe Rossi added a second from the penalty spot just after the hour and midfielder Santi Cazorla made it 3-0 with a classy finish.
Played on Saturday:
REAL MADRID 2 ATLETICO MADRID 1
Real got their title defence off to a winning start when a deflected shot from new signing Wesley Sneijder 10 minutes from time sealed an entertaining comeback victory at the Bernabeu.
Atletico went ahead when Argentine youngster Sergio Aguero stole in at the far post to head in after a corner with less than a minute on the clock.
Real levelled 14 minutes later when Raul headed in a fine cross by Sergio Ramos.
REAL MURCIA 2 REAL ZARAGOZA 1
A second-half strike by new signing Fernando Baiano gave Murcia maximum points on their return to the top flight.
Former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Mejia put the home side in front with a header on 17 minutes but former AC Milan and Real Betis striker Ricardo Oliveira equalised with a curling shot into the top corner on the half hour.
Zaragoza's new striker Matuzalem was sent off for a foul on midfielder Mario Regueiro after 73 minutes.
SEVILLA 4 GETAFE 1
Michael Laudrup's Getafe went in front in the second minute thanks to a free kick from Pablo Hernandez but fell apart when midfielder Francisco Sousa and defender David Cortes were sent off in separate incidents before halftime.
Sevilla took full advantage in the second period with goals from Jesus Navas, Luis Fabiano, Frederic Kanoute and Alexander Kerzhakov, three coming from crosses by Portuguese winger Duda.
The win was overshadowed by the collapse of Sevilla's Antonio Puerta who had to be rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.
