Real Madrid got themselves a win at the weekend, defeating Celta Vigo by a 2-0 scoreline.
Marco Asensio was the star of the show with a goal and an assist. Eder Militao got himself on the scoresheet as well. And while Karim Benzema might not have scored or assisted on the day, this will go down as a milestone moment for him.
Benzema has been at Real Madrid since 2009. That summer, his signing might have gone a bit under the radar with megastars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka arriving as well. But over the years, the Frenchman has established himself as an all-time legend at the club.
As reported by Mundo Deportivo, with the win over Celta Vigo, Benzema added his 437th triumph with Real Madrid. The French striker equalled Sergio Ramos in the second place of players with most wins with the club. Ahead of them is Iker Casillas with 463 wins.
While Benzema might be still quite some distance away from Casillas, the expectation is that he will eventually end up breaking that record. Rumours have suggested that the Frenchman has agreed a one year contract extension with the club, although no official announcement has been made yet.
Benzema needs 27 more wins to overtake Casillas’ record of most wins as a Real Madrid player. That seems very achievable if he does stay on for another year and is able to remain relatively injury-free.
For years, Benzema was not given the credit for his contributions to Real Madrid. Since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018, he has stepped up though and established himself as the face of the team.
He reached the pinnacle of his individual career by winning the Ballon d’Or, for his remarkable 2021/22 campaign. This season has not been as good for him but the Frenchman could still play a big part in a Champions League and Copa del Rey double.
