This summer transfer window had promised to be a landmark one for Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants were linked with both Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. The signing of the Frenchman was considered by many fans as a mere formality while the Norwegian’s addition would have made Los Blancos unstoppable for the next decade to come.
As we all know, things did not work out like that. Neither player arrived, and the only major signings Real Madrid have made this summer are Antonio Rudiger and Aurelien Tchouameni.
The club have been more focused on exits instead. As a result, long-time stars like Gareth Bale, Isco, Marcelo and Casemiro have left. And it looks like Marco Asensio’s name could be added to that list soon as well.
The Spaniard is rumoured to have left the Real Madrid hierarchy unhappy by not signing a new deal with the club. As reported by El Confidencial (via Mirror), in response, Florentino Perez has told manager Carlo Ancelotti not to play the winger under any circumstances.
Interestingly, Asensio did come off the bench in the game against Celta Vigo, but those are the only minutes of football that he has played this season.
While he might not have been a regular starter last season either, he was featuring in almost every game in some fashion.
Asensio’s current deal with Real Madrid is believed to run out next summer, and as a result, he could very well end up leaving before the transfer window slams shut, if the right offer comes in. Clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been linked with the Spaniard in recent times.
When he was first breaking into the Real Madrid first-team, Asensio was considered as a future superstar. It is safe to say things have not gone his way.
