Real Madrid interested in Al-Nassr defender after Yoro snub

After missing out on signing Leny Yoro to Manchester United, Real Madrid are now eyeing Al-Nassr centre-back Aymeric Laporte, according to El Mundo.

Yoro was Real Madrid’s top choice to strengthen their defence, especially since they needed someone young and physically robust who could grow alongside players like Eder Militao, Rudiger, and David Alaba.

The departure of Nacho and Rafa Marin left gaps in the team’s defence. However, Yoro chose Manchester United, lured by an irresistible financial offer. Now, Real Madrid are working on their Plan B, with Laporte being the main candidate.

Laporte, a Spanish national team defender, made a significant impact at the European Championships, being recognized as one of the best centre-backs and it is said that he had been on Real Madrid’s radar even when he was playing for Manchester City.

Last summer, he moved to Saudi Arabia, accepting a lucrative deal with Al Nassr. Despite his move, his stellar performance in Germany has brought him back into focus for top European clubs.

At 30 years old, Laporte presents a cost-effective and high-quality option to revitalize a defensive unit that has been a concern for the coaching staff.

Real Madrid’s current defensive lineup is dealing with several challenges. Militao is recovering, Rudiger has just completed one of the most gruelling seasons of his career, and Alaba’s recovery is progressing slower than anticipated.

Furthermore, while Militao is still relatively young, Rudiger turned 31 in March and Alaba just turned 32.

The team desperately needs fresh talent, whether a young player like Yoro or an experienced one like Laporte to ensure adequate rotation throughout the 2024/25 season.

Meanwhile Laporte, under contract with Al-Nassr until June 2026, is reportedly keen on returning to Europe and would be willing to negotiate a move to Madrid.

His left-footed profile is particularly appealing to Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff, and the Spanish national team players at Madrid have praised his abilities during training camps.

His performance at the European Championships was nothing short of impressive. He formed a strong partnership with Le Normand and Nacho, and despite initial doubts about his physicality, he emerged as the tournament’s best defender.

Real Madrid are now contemplating the best approach to secure Laporte’s services. A loan deal seems to be the most practical option, allowing the club to stabilise the defensive position for the current season while they continue searching for a young central defender for the future.

This strategy would provide the necessary time to find a long-term solution without compromising the team’s immediate needs.
