Antoine Griezmann put on a masterful performance, scoring two goals and securing an easy 5-1 victory for Atletico Madrid against Cadiz in La Liga on Wednesday.
Antoine Griezmann led Atletico Madrid to a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Cadiz on Wednesday, allowing the club to surpass rivals Real Madrid and claim the second spot in La Liga.
Diego Simeone's side are currently one point above the champions, but remain 13 points behind leaders Barcelona, who are only two points away from securing the title.
Griezmann, who has been in superb form, scored two goals in the game to give Atletico a comfortable lead against a struggling Cadiz side. With 13 goals and 13 assists this season in La Liga, the French forward has been instrumental in Atletico's success.
Alvaro Morata added a third goal in the 49th minute, followed by Yannick Carrasco's penalty and Nahuel Molina's goal, which left Cadiz with no chance of a comeback. Chucky Lozano scored a brilliant consolation for Cadiz, but it was not enough to make a difference.
Meanwhile, Valencia managed to earn a 1-1 draw with fifth-placed Villarreal, thanks to Samuel Lino's goal cancelling out Nicolas Jackson's opener. The result saved Valencia from a fourth defeat in six games, but they remain just outside the drop zone.
Getafe's 1-0 win over Celta Vigo allowed them to move to the 18th position, level on points with Valencia in 17th place. Enes Unal's early penalty secured the victory for Getafe and put pressure on Espanyol, who are three points behind and will visit Sevilla on Thursday.
The draw dented Villarreal's chances of Champions League qualification, leaving them seven points behind fourth-placed Real Sociedad, who beat champions Real Madrid on Tuesday.
