A bus carrying Real Madrid's first team squad to a hotel before its Champions League last 16 first leg clash with RB Leipzig suffered an accident on Monday after crashing into a Toyota Avensis, MARCA reported via BILD.
Yet to open his account in the colours of the club, amid what has proven a difficult start to life all told in Spain, the 18-year-old was therefore understandably keen to step up.
And, as has since been revealed by DAZN (as cited by Marca) in the game’s aftermath, the likes of Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga were joined in their efforts to convince Joselu to afford responsibility to Güler by none other than head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Upon the former making his way towards the penalty spot with the ball in his hands, Ancelotti was heard calling out to Dani Carvajal that Güler should step up.
Assistant boss Davide Ancelotti quickly intervened, though, urging his father to return to the bench with Joselu already in position.
And, despite word having never actually reached the frontman that his young teammate was the preferred candidate of his manager, Real Madrid’s fans, as alluded to above, have nevertheless seen it fit to take firm at Joselu on Monday night.
"After a brief stop, fortunately all those involved continued without suffering any injuries," BILD noted.
MARCA added that nobody inside the bus felt the collision, and the Madrid delegation was able to continue its trip to team accommodation.
"A fan who, because he was filming the bus in his car, lost his way. The steering wheel went and it bounced. We didn't notice. The people who came in buses behind us saw it," someone from the club told MARCA.
Madrid's traveling contingent arrived at the Steigenberger hotel in Leipzig city center at 14:40 PM local time and "clear scratches from the impact it had suffered with the fan's car" were visible according to MARCA.
The incident occurred more than 30 hours before Madrid is set to recommence its quest for a record 15th Champions League crown against 2019/2020 semi-finalists Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena.
Going into the tie, Ancelotti only has one natural central defender to choose from in Nacho after losing David Alaba, Eder Militao, and Antonio Rudiger to injuries at various parts of the season.
Captain Nacho is likely to partner right back Dani Carvajal or midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni in the heart of the back line.
Furthermore, Madrid won't be able to rely on top scorer Jude Bellingham either after he left Saturday's 4-0 win over Girona with an ankle sprain.
According to MARCA, the Englishman is targeting the return leg against Leipzig at the Bernabeu on March 6 for his return.
