Real Madrid to 'step up pursuit' of Premier League defender during international break

Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to step up their pursuit of Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen over the international break.

Huijsen has been one of the standout performers in Andoni Iraola's side since he established himself in the backline in December.

The 19-year-old, who arrived from Juventus last summer, has made 16 consecutive Premier League starts having formed a strong central defensive partnership with Ilya Zabarnyi.

Huijsen was initially called up to the Spain Under-21s squad, before it was announced on Monday that he will replace the injured Inigo Martinez in the senior side.

The Dutch-born defender will hope to make his international debut in Spain's two-legged affair against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals.

It seems that one team in particular will pay close attention to Huijsen's performances if he features against Ronald Koeman's side.

According to The Sun, Real Madrid scouts will take a close look at the highly-rated Bournemouth defender in the coming days.

Los Blancos were already known to be among Huijsen's potential suitors, with Carlo Ancelotti's set to face competition from a number of Premier League clubs.

Arsenal and Manchester United are believed to be in the race for Huijsen's signature, while Newcastle United have also been mooted as a potential destination for the former Juventus man.

Los Blancos are seemingly view Huijsen as someone who could help them in their mission to refresh their backline, with Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba both in their 30s.

At 19, Huijsen has the potential and ability to become a mainstay in the Real Madrid defence for the long-term future.

Real Madrid are also aware they need to add further depth to their defence after seeing their lack of options exposed by injuries to Alaba and Eder Militao this season.

As well as Huijsen, Real Madrid are considering Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite as a possible transfer target for the summer window.
